Wearing a mask in public for months on end has caused skin problems for a lot of us. Luckily, you’ve got a few options when it comes to whipping it back into shape.

Here’s what you need to do if you want healthy, glowing skin underneath that mask.

1. Avoid or Limit Makeup

Makeup can cause problems all on its own for your skin, especially if your skin doesn’t agree with the ingredients or you leave it on overnight. If you absolutely need to wear makeup, make sure to put it on in light layers. And don’t forget to wash it off every night. If your makeup is causing skin issues when you wear it with your mask, think about switching to a makeup line with fewer irritating ingredients. Experiment with some new products and see how your skin reacts.

2. Wash and Moisturize Your Skin Every Day

Using a mild daily face wash can help reduce dryness in your skin and help you look your best underneath the mask. Follow up with a good moisturizer and your skin should be in tip-top shape. If you’ve developed acne because of your mask, you might want to find a face wash that combats that specific problem. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to wash your face masks regularly.

3. Don’t Neglect Your Lips

Dry skin and chapped lips are common problems from wearing a face mask regularly. To avoid dry, chapped lips, try applying petroleum jelly or Shea butter to your lips to keep them moisturized. It may smear off if you’re wearing your mask for a while, so bring some along with you wherever you go so that you can always reapply when you need to.

4. Wear the Right Kind of Mask

Make sure to find a mask that fits your face in a comfortable way. Before you buy any new masks, ensure it has at least two layers of fabric and that it’s made from natural, soft and breathable fabric, such as cotton on the inside layer that touches your skin. Wearing a mask that’s snug can help protect both you and others from COVID-19, so make sure it fits snuggly across your nose, under your chin, and on the sides. A mask that slides around isn’t doing anyone any good.

Don’t Forget About the Kids

As for those of your children old enough to wear a mask, don’t forget to care for their skin as well. The first thing you need to do is make sure they have a mask that fits their face well; otherwise, they’ll be fidgeting with it causing even more irritation against the skin. Find kids’ face masks that’ll fit snuggly, like those from Green Supply. It’s also wise to have them wash their face every day when they wake up and again at night before they go to bed if they don’t already.

Just because we have to wear face masks everywhere we go doesn’t mean the skin underneath the mask has to suffer. By taking the above precautions, you can get your skin back into tip-top shape. And by getting the right type of mask for your face, you can avoid rearranging it and potentially transfer germs to your mask or face.
