Everyone goes through an existential crisis at least once in their lives. It comes out of nowhere, and it shakes your entire existence. Is the point of life working a 9 to 5 job until you get old and retire? Will your life consist of constantly being scared to ask for a promotion and afford a better lifestyle? When will the time come when you’ll actually start doing something meaningful and leave a mark in history?
These questions bother everyone since those questions don’t have an answer. But your entire life can change if you shift your thinking. You see, we are all guilty of listening and doing things that other people like. These other people can be our friends, family, significant others, or acquaintances. Click here to read more.
They almost always mean good. They tell us to go to college and study a field that’s in high demand. That’s how we’re going to make a lot of money and live the life of our dreams. It sounds like a simple formula, but that rarely happens. During that time, life happens, and we don’t follow our passions and settle for something less. So, how do you break out of the rut?
You can’t control everything
An enormous sense of relief comes when you realize that you aren’t capable of controlling everything in your life. When you surrender yourself to fate, God, the Universe, or whatever you want to call it, you’ll realize that most of the things in your life are out of your control.
There’s a massive traffic jam in front of you that’s going to make you late for work, so what? By becoming angry, you’re not helping yourself, nor the people around you. That’s much better than stressing about something that wasn’t your fault. Things in life are happening without your consent. The sooner you realize that life isn’t about what happens to you, instead, how you react to the things that happen, you’ll have it figured out.
Act like you don’t care
We learn things by mirroring other people. We learn to walk and talk by imitation the adults that take care of us when we’re babies. There’s something in the methodology of fake it until you make it. It might seem weird at first to act like you don’t have a care in the world.
But after a month, it will feel completely natural. If you start smiling and laughing when you’re sad, you’ll start feeling happy. The same thing is true about not giving a fuck. It’s definitely difficult to walk around your workplace while some coworkers are saying something behind your back. But you’re not going to change their behavior, so it doesn’t matter.
Do things that make you feel good
The zero fucks method isn’t about not caring about anything in your life and feeling nihilistic all of the time. Instead, it’s about finding the correct things to care about. If you find a new skill that you want to learn, don’t hesitate and don’t even think of what other people will say about it.
Just go and do it. It will be much more rewarding rather than obsessing about it, watching videos about it, but never doing it yourself. That can be mixed martial arts, ballet, DIY projects, or even repainting your home in different colors. Do whatever makes you happy. That’s going to give you the ultimate freedom.
Find a reason to be happy
We all need something that gives meaning to our lives. Spend five minutes each morning being thankful and grateful for all the things you have. As soon as you start reflecting on these things, you’re going to find at least one reason why you should be happy.
There are so many beautiful, weird, awesome, cool, and complex things in the world. There’s certainly something that resonates with you specifically. This can be as simple as finding an extra chicken nugget in your meal, or being thankful and happy that you have a roof over your head and a healthy family. Remember to care about the things that are most important to you, and filter out the noise from others’ opinions.
