So, you’ve decided to make a bucket list – you might be wondering, where on earth (quite literally) do you start? Visiting places you’ve always wanted to go doesn’t have to be a pipe dream, so use a bucket list to keep you on track and get you achieving your dreams!

What is a bucket list?

A bucket list is simply a list of places or experiences you want to do before you ‘kick the bucket’.

Why should you have a bucket list?

The aim of your bucket list is to maximize your living experience to its potential, so you can really say you’ve lived your life to the fullest.

Creating your bucket list

A bucket list is as personal as it can get, so it’s really up to you how you choose to title, write, and store it. You could write your aspirations in a journal with a rough timeline, or create a detailed checklist to place on your wall.

No matter what you decide to do, just make sure you don’t make it too long or convoluted. You can accomplish a lot in your lifetime, but let’s face it, there’s only a certain amount of time and money you can spend pursuing these dreams, so keep your list reasonable! Keeping the different places on your list between three to twenty means you’re more likely to complete it.

Having a list too long risks you just writing down wishes, not plans. We recommend having a tangible and realistic list of places you’d like to visit, as well as detailing the actual activities you’d like to do whilst you’re there. For example, if Rome is on your bucket list, think of the places you want to visit whilst there, this could be anything from a guided tour around the Colosseum to throwing pennies in the Trevi Fountain. This keeps you on track when you come to plan your trip!

What should you include on a bucket list?

As previously stated, your bucket list should be personal to you. However, it’s common for people to have similar places and activities they’d like to do in their lifetime. When you begin constructing your bucket list, think of the places you’ve always wanted to go, but never had the chance to!

Also, keep in mind that places that exist now, that might not exist in the future. Unfortunately and unsurprisingly, climate change is having a devastating effect on many of the natural wonders of the world, including The Great Barrier Reef in Australia and snow that tops Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. When you add such beauty to your bucket list, plan volunteering activities and donate to relevant organizations, so not only are you able to visit these wonderful places, but you also have a hand in preserving them.

If you’re stuck for ideas, chat with your family and friends to get your ideas flowing or start visiting places you’ve already decided you want to go and take inspiration from there.

How should I order my bucket list?

Any way you like it! We recommend starting with the cheapest or closest places, so you can start ticking stuff off quicker, making you feel more accomplished and in turn keeping you motivated to complete your list. At the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter how you order your list, just get traveling!
